Preparing to network

🏠 > Network like a pro > Preparing to network

Ten top tips for preparing to network like a pro and build connections at in person events:

1. Be authentic: Dress appropriately for you to be comfortable at the event, and aim to project a confident image whether that’s wearing a business suit, a kilt or a tuxedo t-shirt. Be 100% you!

2. Ask open-ended questions: Ask open-ended questions that encourage the other person to share information and insights.

3. Listen actively: Listen carefully to the other person's responses, and show genuine interest in what they have to say.

4. Bring business cards: Have a stack of business cards ready to hand out, as this is a quick and easy way to exchange contact information.

5. Take notes: Take notes after each conversation to help you remember key details about the person, their business or industry, and any follow-up actions. I often write on the back of business cards, or if I add a new person to my phone, I include how I met them in their name.

6. Prepare your elevator pitch: Have a short and concise introduction that highlights your experience, skills, and goals or concentrate on what makes you unique and memorable.

7. Look for common ground: Try to find common ground with other attendees, such as shared interests, backgrounds, or experiences.

8. Be confident, but not pushy: Be confident and assertive when introducing yourself, but avoid coming across as overly aggressive or pushy.

9. Be respectful of others' time: Be respectful of other peoples' time and attention, and avoid monopolising the conversation or interrupting others at an event.

10. Follow up promptly: Follow up with new contacts promptly after the event, either through email, phone or social media. More on this later!
